I was glad that I got to speak with Annie about the Salt crystals, since she suggested some exciting ideas I could try with my discovery.
- Can I somehow remove crystals from the wooden sticks and place them elsewhere?
- Look at Salt Bride: A bio Engineered wedding dress from crystallization of salt from the Dead Sea
- Try soaking different media with wires wrapped around holes in the solution – could I crop crystals at strategic locations?
I collected different absorbent materials and drilled holes large enough to allow copper wire and strips, in the hope that submerging part of these in my solution would cause similar capillarity and corrosion at points where the wires meet the material.
22. Copper wire, copper strip wound across holes drilled in dense foam, dipped in salt and vinegar
Observation: Copper strip produced the typical organic blue crystals, but copper wire failed to show any crystallization. I believe this could be due to protective coatings applied on the copper wire, whereas the sheet metal had rough, fresh cut edges exposing pure copper from inside.
23. Isolating crystals – copper strip pieces floating in wooden boat dipped in pink salt and vinegar solution
Observation: Crystals started to appear on the boat (wooden surface) as well as the copper particles, showing the deeper blue colour as more prominent on the copper pieces. Does this mean that I don’t really need the metal bits to grow my fern shaped crystals?
24. Scaling up: Wooden dowels as ‘wands’ with crystals at the ends
