I have been slow at looking at potential applications and precedents for my experiments so far, but my current state of mind willed an idea based on the concept of wedding bands as ‘cuffs’ forcefully bonding two people in an agreement, and the effect of age, wear, time and experience on this relationship. I might be coming from the concept of arranged marriages in my country, – the idea of 2 people being ‘connected’ with a stranger for the rest of their lives seems a bit daunting. I want to create a pair of ‘cuff-rings’ – a shiny brass version, studded with semi precious stones – symbolizing the beginning of the forged relationship; and the second – an aged version reflecting black and blue patinas, possibly crystals (through the use of brass pipes and wood shavings) as a time based (transformational?) work. Questioning how the connection shapes over time – I hope to let the materials age, break links, forge new bonds and show some new colours..
