Speculative Drawing

21 November 2019

Inspired by Lee Trimming’s drawing at the Speed of Thought exhibit, I came home and started doodling on my square pad. I drew this over 2-3 days, different moods and music (which might reflect in the curvature and lengths of strokes).

This unplanned drawing exercise did help me think while making, something I had been struggling to do since the beginning of Stage 2. It also helped me express through pencil and paper, the confusion and sensory and emotional overload I have been putting myself through for a while now.

I wanted to take my discoveries of crystallization and explore electroforming (introduced to me by Alkesh) as a combined experiment towards a potential end product. I also wanted to utilize my newly discovered aesthetic of speculative drawing into the product (for lack of other inspiring forms and shapes). I decided to 3D print my speculative drawing using the Aerb 3D Printing pen. As opposed to the 3D printer (for which i would have had to wait till monday, produce Rhino drawings, wait for printing and redo in case of errors), the Pen also allowed me to ‘draw in space’, and thoughtfully engage with the material while making. I feel guilty about the PLA plastic used as filament in this pen, and hope to look for organic, non toxic alternative filaments for my next exercise.

Further, I want to coat these objects with conductive paint and use them as patterns for electroforming with copper.
