The V&A originated out of an effort to improve the condition of Britain’s industry, a direct impact of The Great Exhibition of 1851. It was to be a 3D encyclopaedia of materials and techniques. Its current aims are to educate designers, manufacturers and public in art and design. The building itself took more than 50 years to be completed, with frequent changes and additions (mostly to add space).
I am interested in visiting the sainsbury gallery which is a column free underground space lit by a skylight opening out in the sackler courtyard.
I would also like to visit and observe the intricate tapestry in the refreshment rooms, something I have been curious about during my previous visit as well.
With regard to the collections, I am keen on looking at Droog’s chest of drawers in the the furniture section, as it caught my interest during Isabel’s presentation yesterday. I would also like to visit the ECAL 3D print farm in Clare’s presentation.
I am also keen on viewing the museum’s furniture and jewellery collections. In particular, I would like to look at lady Mountbatten’s headband in the jewellery collection. I am interested in this piece due to its modular use as a headband or transformed use as 2 bracelets. I also found the rubies and emeralds Inspired by the Maharaja’s jewels, cut in floral shapes quite fascinating the last time I visited the V&A.
