Site – Greens across the Railway Line from Nomadic Community Gardens, Shoreditch, London
Means of navigation: complex – one side cordoned off by the railway line, with access gates locked, route involves 15-20 mins of walking/cycling/skateboarding minimum. (Some areas have restricted vehicular access) Hence, rich in experiential quality.
What Street Art means to me:
- Ownership of the city, individual expression, Sense of belonging
- Context of constant change in mood, aeasthetics, expression, topics, people involved – mood of city
- Sunday Brick lane market: food, art and other things for sale
Context: Various topics, mediums and ideas expressed on available surfaces
Different ways of working:
- Theirry Noir: with team, building owners invite him
- Community Garden: art as a therapy, expression – relaxed atmosphere, undertaken as a hobby
Products and furniture associated with the space:
- Aerial work platforms (cherry picker/ladder etc)
- Projectors and equipment for tracing
- Stencils
- Cameras – professional and casual – for capturing the art and environment
- Surfaces for expression: walls, floors, ceilings, street lights, windows, doors, street signs, automobiles
- Pallets and cartons, for carrying paint and equipment
Prospective products and spaces for the site:
- Ladder/cherry picker/aerial platform doubling as street furniture- higher works less likely of vandalism
- Projector installation- for tracing art- resource for all
- Camera- to capture fast paced, changing art scene- since art is often wiped out and walls are repainted between 24 hours to 1 week on the common long walls of site
Potential alternative uses of the space:
- Art market (Brick lane sunday market!!)
- Public plaza
- Pop up store/ flea market
Potential services and needs at the site:
- Litter picking
- Recycling (Owners want to make it zero waste)
- Watering

Site: Access
- Obscure location, minimal advertisement, yet attracts people
Site: Spatial experience
Context: Allen gardens across unnamed road (access to residential area)
Context Study: Nomadic Community Gardens, Nomadic Community
Nomadic community garden-
- Previously wasteland, undocumented development into ‘secret garden’
- Context of street art- proximity of brick lane, pedestrian access, minimal way finding and signage, limited access – selective access to those who know about the space (beauty of organic development like a secret club)
- Context of green- gardening, bees, birds, flowers, insects- ecological concerns
- Art scene- ever changing, intensely customised, community led
- Space usage- event venue- comedy, music performance, food, gardening tips, DIY events,
- Space for individual DIY projects, allotment beds (rented garden spaces), bee-keeping, bike repair, cafe
Some projected needs for the community:
- Tools, money, gardening and maintenance, tool storage,
Site Problems:
- Trash Disposal
- Proper Toilets
- Feeling of aloofness among tourists/visitors (lack of connection with community’s activities apart from photographing them) – could be just my personal viewpoint..
